Thailand Update September 2009

sinclair-peters_dlDear Friends and Family,

Some of you may know that the Bethel church is built next to a canal. Every Sunday, after we have worshipped Jesus together, we sit on our haunches and wash dishes in a big basin.  With the beautiful view of the rice fields in front of us, it is sometimes easy to forget how dirty the water is.  But then we see a dead dog floating by! As missionaries, we already know about the dangers of Typhoid and parasites, so we ask ourselves the question again, “why are we washing our church dishes in the canal??” We say nothing to our Thai Believers because we know that they already feel the shame of their living situation. They have no other options for clean water.

We began to intercede weekly as a church that God would help us obtain clean water. One day, last spring a visitor from America visited Bethel. Without mentioning our need at all, she said to me, “I would love to raise some money for you to have a well dug. Would that be a blessing?” We were pumped! (please excuse the pun :)

After this wonderful offer came to us, we began to do our “homework” in the community. We met with officials and started to inquire politely about why they had not yet dug a well for the village? What would it cost to dig a well?  About a month later one of our Believers came to me and said, “The Mayor wants to talk to you Louise.” As we visited with him, he announced to us that the government has put aside money for a well for our village, Khlong Luang Pheng!  They said they would be investing over 10 thousand dollars. He asked, “Would we be able to help with the cost of some piping?” Team 2000 and our Thai Pastor all agreed that God has clearly given us favor in the community. We were thankful to communicate to these local officials that Christians love the Thai people and care about their suffering.

Lord God, Thank you for hearing the cries of your people! Thank you that the compassion of one person in N.America has activated justice and prevented disease for a whole community! We ask that you would cause the Government to hold true to their promise and that corruption would have no part of this project. Thank Lord for clean water!  Hallelujah!
